The eagerly anticipated parallel story to the award winning Crysis, Developed by Crytek, Crysis Warhead makes many improvements over the original, with a few new weapons and vehicles, plus some efficiency tweaks. But what does Wuup think?
In this new instalment in the Crysis world, you play as one of the other remaining members of Raptor, Sergeant Sykes or ‘Psycho’. Warhead’s story picks up a little way past the start of Crysis, mainly after the bits where you would have met with Nomad. So don’t worry about having to replay similar levels. You have a new “villain” to fight in the form of KPA Colonel Lee.
However you don’t have time to really relate to any of the characters, it seems like the dialog moments are they’re just as filling space between shooting things. The voice acting isn’t terrible but could have had a lot more emotion to it, sometimes the characters, Psycho especially, seem to be a bit deadpan.
Warhead plays pretty much exactly the same, utilising the nanosuit’s abilities to overcome any situation or obstacle presented. The game also sports an array of new weapons and vehicles, most of which are ripped strait from the multiplayer. These new additions seem more like a selling point to get people to buy the game, rather than actually being useful during the game. Actually when you look at it there are only 3 new weapons and 1 new vehicle, It seems Crytek have just recycled parts of the multiplayer in order to beef up they’re offerings.
The game also adds a few new actions sequences, which feel very unnatural at least on Delta. One of them involves escorting a crashed pilot through enemy lines to allied soldiers. Great in theory, But when you combine not being able to control the turret while driving and armour plating the thickness of paper it makes for a system of; Drive, switch to turret, shoot, switch to driving, drive more. All the while switching vehicles and getting shot to shit. And if you try and approach it by stealth you’re ally gets annihilated. Once you master the dodgy system above then it’s a breeze and normal play can resume.
Farcry was famed at being a completely open environment, where the player can choose exactly how to approach an objective. However both Crysis and Warhead are almost completely linear, while this isn’t a bad thing, but limits you’re ability to make more tactical approaches to a situation.
Most useless single player weapon: Claymore (seriously even on delta you don’t need them).
Crysis Warhead also comes with a stand alone multiplayer Crysis Wars. Essentially it’s the same as the old multiplayer but with more maps and a brand new mode; Team Instant Action. The best thing about Crysis Wars is the amount of balancing and bug fixing. However be weary of joining any non Punkbuster servers, as they are generally full of hackers (I kept getting shot through walls and randomly dying in one server).
Using the same engine as the previous game, Warhead brings nothing new to the table. However Crytek seem to have made major optimisations allowing slower machines able to play at reasonable levels of detail, while still retaining that amazing look at higher settings.
Final Thoughts
Crysis Warhead is a great addition to the Crysis series. It has all the right things a good shooter has. But that is its problem, Crysis Warhead is an average shooter, everything has been done before and better. The only real difference with Warhead is the new weapons, multiplayer and the nano suit.
So I still recommend Crysis Warhead to any FPS crazy person. However if you’re looking for quality play Half-Life 2 (don’t you say anything Alan!).
Plus I’m getting far more fun out of Farcry 2 (well done Ubisoft!).
