Hi,
Howdy, lets pretend that this article is on a Wednesday cause I’m late. Sorry!
Recently I have been doing a lot of Google Ad-Words work as we do PPC management. I’ve been trying out some new stuff to get higher quality scores and have noticed that since the new Adwords interface came into use, they have seem to be a bit tougher on Quality Score (QS). Usually 7/10 was adequate, but those 7/10’s in some cases have dropped down to 4/10. In retaliation, I set out to try and figure out a reusable technique which would allow 10/10 Quality Score, and I think I found something that works. It will seem pretty obvious to you, but its amazing how easy is to over look the basic steps involved – and how many people are not doing this.
Why is Quality Score Important?
Quality Score is what Google uses to determine if they should show their PPC results, in what order, and what cost the bids are. Basically the lower the score, the higher the bid, the lower the placement, the less frequently they will show your advert. This means that it’s no good to them, and you end up paying over the odds. Your cost per acquisition will be higher.
Ok Ok, Shut up, how do I get 10/10

OK now this is very simple, but it works. Follow these steps.
- Create your campaign, research your keywords etc, build your site.
- Ensure you have a privacy policy, copyright statement, terms & conditions.
- Choose your keyword you want to get to 10/10.
- Group that keyword in adgroup with maybe 5-10 other very similar keywords (extremely similar).
- Create a landing page called site.com/main-keyword.html
- On that landing page, include your keyword in the <title></title>, H1 Tags, and 3-5 times in the main copy of the site. As well as any alt tags on images (use full descriptions, not keyword spamming).
- Put keyword into meta description & meta keywords, mixed in with other relevant keywords.
- Create an Ad on your adgroup (plus several more), which include that keyword in your main title, and the 2 lines of copy they give you.
- Make the ad display URL as site.com/keyword
- Link it to your new landing page.
- Done, rinse and repeat for all your other keywords.
Yes this is time consuming, but it’s worth it for:
- Higher click through rate (= better QS and lower bids)
- Higher Conversions (= everything is now targeted)
- Lower Bids (= your quality score should be 10/10 – you save money)
If you don’t get 10/10, which on a couple of occasions I didn’t, you can either create a new adgroup, move the keywords which didn’t to there, then do the same process again. OR edit your landing page to increase the frequency that keyword is mentioned.
Your QS can fluctuate from the first time you set it up, so it’s worth waiting at least 24-48 hrs before making changes. I had some go from instant 10/10, to 7/10, and back to 10/10 and haven’t moved since.
Hope this helps. It helped me! Let me know how you get on, also drop a comment below.

Hey Thanks, I was having some trouble as I was a bit out of the loop recently and noticed that google made some changes to the way that they get their QS. This was helpful.

I only just noticed your comment Mario in answer to your questions:
An ‘adgroup’ is a group within a campaign, you can create it from the admin panel of adwords when you logged in. Each adgroup can contain as many keywords as you like, but for this tutorial, you want as few as possible relating directly to each other.
A landing page, is the page of your website they will and on, when clicking through from an advert for a ‘adgroup’. Landing pages an be automatically generated depending on what software you use or have made OR are just straight standard HTML pages, in which you need to create yourself individually.
Hope this helps.

Nice article. Yes, basically, those are the things you have to do to get 10/10 score. I have some additions to these that allow me to consistently get 10/10 score as well.

Hi Scott,
Thanks for the comment!
Yes, you should break these down into as many adgroups as necessary, more the better, yes its time consuming, pace yourself because it will be rewarding for you
Best of luck, and feel free to come back with advice, other people have commented with a lot of success.

Hi Anton,
Thanks for commenting on the blog. There isn’t really much more I can suggest without looking at your account in more detail
Although this might not be an option for you, I could offer you a couple hours of consultancy if you want?
Kind Regards,
Alan
Ken on 28 January, 2010
I’m there with you Anton. I followed the steps exactly and Google would give me 7/10 or 8/10. After an hour or so they would be revised with 4/10.
Alan, I would love to see a sample of a page and keyword that is getting a 10/10 using this method.
Alan Hamlyn on 2 February, 2010
Hi Ken, this article was about 6 months ago and quite a bit has changed from then. I need to write a new article on the latest changes to adwords, but I know its quite common for the keyword to drop to 4/10 and then go back to 10 again quite quickly. Hang in there and let me know if I can help.

Great post, Thanks for the hard work.
I was wondering if you could let me know the new to-do list for current adwords.
I tried creating a new domain name the same as my keyword
then setting the page title, description, meta keywords
and body to all have the keywords but the best score i can get is a 7/10.
Thanks

Hi, what a great article… can you clarify a point for me though?
I have set up AW with 3 campaigns (all interrelated) with ads and keywords. The highest performing keywords can only achieve 7/10 so far. I then read this article and updated my website as per above. Do I now have to wait for Google to recrawl my website before my campaign keywords go from 7 to a 10?
Alan Hamlyn on 19 March, 2010
Hey Liam,
No probs, this article is a little dated now, but generally the advice within it remains the same. I’ll be doing an new article soon with the latest updates, but as this is a bit older I would reckon you could get 8/10 9/10 and the odd 10/10 in most places.
But you are right, like the google crawler for their search index, adsense, they also have a crawler for adwords. This will need to crawl first. It’s also not uncommon for the ranking to drop to 2 or 3 for 1 or 2 days. I don’t know why they started doing it, but I had different things happen. Firstly if you panic and turn your account off, pause it etc, you’ll have to start over, it doesn’t help by doing that. The best thing to do is to leave it. Yes its a bit more costly over a couple of days but it will shoot backup really high in score. 8’s 9’s 10’s. So again, Don’t panic!
Hope this helps,
Alan

Hi,
We are running over 20 different Ad groups spread out through about 4 Campaigns. If we create a new landing page for each of these Ad Groups, will Google penalize our site for duplicate content? Each landing page will be very similar, but will switch out the main keyword phrase in the title tags, h1 tages, etc… The landing pages in question are forms used to generate leads.
Thanks!
Alan Hamlyn on 13 July, 2010
Hi there,
I see what your saying and it is a valid concern. Firstly these alternative landing pages I tend not to link to, so they don’t get indexed, secondly if you are concerned that they might be, I suggest using robots.txt as a sure way to keep them separate.
Hope this helps,
Alan
