Google to Retire Video Units on Adsense

I just thought I’d let you know as when I logged int my adsense account, one of their tiny ads on rotation happened to be about the retirement of the Google Video ads! Well that was short lived, seems they didn’t even try to make it work! But by the end of April 2009, your video units will cease to work.

We have used video units ourselves, some days have been great on it, but it did seem oddly, all or nothing.

Google Comments

“What’s happening to the video unit programme?

After re-evaluating the product, we’ve found that it hasn’t been as effective as we had hoped. While we appreciate your interest and support of the product in the past, we have chosen to retire the product.”

I can only assume this is to make way for the new interest-based adverts which has everyone on the net upset. Although really and truthfully it will be good for some users, and not so good for others. I think that part of the problem may be that if someone like a doctor had a little website, put some Adsense on, then one of those was a ‘gambling’ advert to a user visiting, although it may be in context to what the user is interested in, the ‘doctor’ may not want gambling adverts on their website, but we shall see…

Yeah, Google doesn’t allow very much time at all for _anything_ to work before they kill it. This same thing happened with referral ads, Froogle, and with the local business referral representatives. Google is still trying to get local small businesses to sign up, but they’re no longer willing to pay anybody to help the process along …

Yup, they also did referrals for adsense, and firefox. They did firefox because firefox has a built in google search, and improves their searcher volume, and adsense obviously to get more people showing their ads. Once they feel they have got enough from it, they cut it dead, ignoring the fact that some people rely on adsense heavily for their income. Luckily that isn’t the case for Wuup, but is the case for other people I know. As for what you say about froogle, and local business referrals your right. It’s the same as the video ad units, they obviously didn’t see an instant return, and stopped it. They need to give it time, and perhaps look to improve things their end. But I also think related to the video units, that Google is set to make a $400,000,000 loss this year on youtube, as they are failing to monetize it.
