Google’s starting to sound like my mum, it knows whats best for us, wether we agree or not… Ofcourse their main aim is to provide better results than the other top search engines, and to an certain extent that is true.
Lets start with a biggy - Google doesnt allow any buying or selling of links. Well does that stop anyone? No is the answer, they do it anyway, and who is policing it? Well google, but they dont really know how. Sure they can be suspicious of a large number of incoming links, but by the time google has checked em out, there plent of new links… its a rolling cycle.
Does google actually want us to sell anything? Google likes to have all these big content websites, so that users can find the information they need. Trouble is, not everything we are selling on the net has a huge amount of content. Imagine if you sold pencils? Or ball-point pens? I’m sure your limited for content, and generally a dull person anyway. Which then as you dont have much content, pretty much garantees wiki a top spot.
This moves me on to wiki. Yes its a great site, blah blah, but damn, it doesnt really matter what im searching for, it hits a top 3 spot, and usually, if i wanted to buy somethng it isnt relevant to me, plus the information isn’t always reliable - so google? if your results are so important, why rank wiki (with not totally reliable content) so well.
So how do you get a good ranking? Well google says you have to make a natural site. Make it for the users, not the search engines. Unfortunatley we dont live in a moneyless society where everyone eats vegetables and no ones fat.
Here’s a few tips I find work well. Firstly, DONT submit your ‘new’ website to google. It’ll pretty much garantee it at the bottom of the crawler pile. I find whats best is to just link it from another website, and let it be found ‘naturally’. So it starts you off on the right foot, you have an incoming link already, and you havent submitted, so in google’s eyes, your legit. Next, make sure every page has its own Title tags, meta keywords & meta description. All different, none the same. That way google knows your not a moron.
Now all of this wizardry, isnt so hard, its simple stuff, also i really do suggest you getting 10-15 pages of content before you put your site up there. So when google does index you, you dont get 5-10 visitors / day wasting there time… it annoys me, and certainly annoys them.
Thank you google, and if your going to lay down these fun rules, please enforce them better…
