It’s sometimes hard not to be bias when you’ve been waiting expectedly for a game for so long, however I will do my best not be! Also I guess it’s fair to say this review wouldn’t be 100% either as the game has only been out in the UK since yesterday, though I have played it for 5 hours according to my steam account.
Overall
Buy this game! It’s great fun, co-operative & team building, and you shoot zombies, ooo yeah. But lets look at the story first, what the game is about.
What’s the game about?
Bill, Loius, Zoey & Francis, star in 4 of their very own movies, all based on escaping the zombie apocolaypse. You star as one of the chosen characters, though I have noticed many people avoid being the black guy Louis for some reason
…. can’t think why hehe (black guy always gets killed first). You have to fight your way though literal hoards of zombies, and zombie bosses to escape, with an AI director providing a different experience each time. That’s it, simple stuff.
Whats Good!
When you play most shooters, enemies are in static postions, so every time you play it through you get to learn where they are standing all the time, and thus the game becomes easier and easier, till eventually you can wizz through it on the hardest difficulty in no time. However Left 4 Dead addresses this issue with the AI director, which will control where zombies are placed, random AI hordes charging at you, weapon placements, which will often change the difficulty of the gameplay itself.
The level design is spectacular, although most of it is static, and physics are almsot non-existent, it doesn’t seem to matter as you admire the brilliant levels, the hopsital being my favourite so far, the textures are well done, lighting is good, and will keep you on your toes with zombies lurking around in the most unusual places.
Tense, dramatic & difficult gameplay, which I mentione briefly before, makes this a fun game to play, and the co-op element works very well indeed, me and bill enjoyed shutting doors and shooting through them very much indeed.
What’s Crap and we should find who’s accountable and shoot them
The demo promised more weapons, where are they??? All I’ve seen so far is the automatic shotgun, rifle and sniper rifle that I saw in the demo… there are no more…
No physics? What new game has practically no physics these days?
Repetitive at times, although the AI director mixes things up a bit, its important to remember that it’s essentially a shooting zombie game, so that’s all you’ll get.
I’m disappointed they didn’t make a multiplayer mode just like the Zombie Panic Source Game… but the versus is pretty fun, just different.
The mutiplayer quick match, dedicated servers are absolutley naff, it’s hard to get into a game which isn’t laggy, you can’t host one yourself unless it’s a LAN game, and for some reason, if the dedicated server search fails, it asks if you want to host a LAN game, and as the lobby host’s are random, some idiots click yes and subsequently it kicks everyone from the game… as it’s an internet game, not LAN… Valve, steam, whoever need to sort this quickly, cause it’s very annoying. It’s just luck if you get into a server which isn’t lagging like a dog.
Conclusion
That’s about it, very unbias for me, but these are honest obvservations, so go get teh game and enjoy!
