Linux & Ubuntu

I think we’re all looking for an alternative to what we are used to, Windows XP or Mac – and again this struck me, the last few days I’ve been trying to find one.

I started out by looking at my options, Mac, well I hear its beautiful to look at, but it has a hefty price tag on it. I even considered giving it ago, but I have AMD hardware and Mac’s only like intel, so that struck me down in my tracks. The next logical step for me was to look at Linux. The last time I did so, not including the server was about 5 years ago, and I did use it for quite some time, well before I got into programming and web development. It was fine then, I loved its stability, but now thats all changed. I gave Ubuntu a go, and I have to admit how beautiful this operating system looks, it was inspiring. Windows which wobble when you move them, a 3d desktop, multiple desktops, motion burs, animations on maximize and minimize, it was all great. After playing with it, I thought I’d see how far wine had got, and compatability with windows and Linux. I installed the win package, which was easy peasy, and I’d read elsewhere on the net that the 2 programs i need do work, but then there was a snag. Basically they are either bloody hard to get working, or only older versions work. Which is no good to me!

My conclusion was that I had to go back to XP, I can’t work without those programs, which is sad really, because without the practical side of linux working, I cant switch, and I really do want to.

I can see in the next few years the compatability wil be better, so when I get the itch again, I’ll let you know how it goes.

I have used Ubuntu and Linux for about 3 years now. I love it personally. True there is compatibility issues but there will always be so. Linux is community driven to the point without the community it would just die.

While you may of found its draw backs put you off, its advantages drive me towards it. Coding java and c on Ubuntu is a dream. Especially since it compiles to the same standard as the uni’s unix server box. Which it “has” to ¬,¬

Any ways long live open source!
