So I think in total I have been using osx for a few months now and have gotten over the majority of the “How do I do this?” and can now safely say mac’s os x is a good operating system but it does have some flaws.
I own and work on a 2010 revision of the macbook, so some of the stuff I like.
1) Program installing, simply drag the application into the application folder and you’re done. Simple to uninstall, simply drag the .app into the trashcan and bingo its gone from your system.
2) quicklook, mainly cause I use it as a calculator
3) the dock I would say needs a mention, it is a lot less cluttered then the windows taskbar or superbar.
4) Screen, Apple love LED backlights and you can’t blame them that much, besides some burning…issues its all awesome.
5) copy and pasting into a terminal window works as it should, which is awesome!
Some stuff I do not like.
1) Finder, I dont find finder that good of a folder manager. It just has some niggles like typing a directory directly into it needing a few more clicks then say with explorer on windows or nautilus on ubuntu linux.
2) iChat, not all of iChat, just 1 specific feature. say you have 2 ichat windows up and you receive a message on both, the little balloon at the bottom will read 2 as it should now when you click on the balloon and it selects one of the windows it will not show the notification for the other im window, it doesn’t bring up the 2nd window to the front so if its hidden you might miss a message. I do not know if this has been patched but I have seen it happen once or twice now.
3) proprietary ports, like the mini display port. I can see the benefits or saving space by having something that can be used with a myriad of adapters, but you also have to remember to bring those adapters with you. also they are crazy expensive directly from apple. Also the apple extender cable for their keyboards….which can only be used with their keyboard is madness, its a basic usb cable.
On the whole I do like it, I love the battery in my macbook, I love the screen, the trackpad and os x for the most part.
In the past I have looked at macs for a more designy world, linux for server and coding and windows for general stuff. Mac can do coding stuff I would say as well as linux, built in python support is nice I have come to find. xCode isn’t too bad
At the end of the day it is all about what you feel most comfortable using, macs are more fluid, windows is more capable and linux is more stable.
Also remember kids, don’t turn on remote login in your mac admin panel, people can ssh into your mac and mess with the brightness and volume settings
