The Internet now is vast, huge and people have taken notice of how much money they could make on it a long time ago. There is also a certain amount of laziness that affects people to the point where they will happily torrent, download, stream or “borrow” when it comes out on the cinema screens.
What I wonder is, would the piracy rate still exist “if” movie were to be online shortly therefore after or on the release day for movie. Sure this will not cancel out the rate of people who pick to watch it illegally completely, but there will be some who will choice it, if only for the better quality and sound. It would have to be cheaper then a movie ticket, less quality then the actual cinema copies and of course it would have to be a proper download, not stream (gosh I hate streams sometimes).
This is probably one of the ways the movie industry will evolve to keep up with the Internet. Less and less people are going to cinemas these days, why? work, children, commitments, clan tournies and the like. Going to cinema is becoming more expensive, the price has gone up at my local one (for students at least) by £2!. Not much addmitedly, but for one as I part of the student race it is.
Movie companies haven’t made a move past a rental service to Apple, Microsoft or Sony yet really. Could this be hurting them in the long run or could be this there only means of survival. True enough the big titles are a big crowd gatherer, but the smaller movies are loosing out.
