So, here we are, another “PS3 vs Xbox 360” article. This one however is not intended to slate either system. This article is simply a feature comparison of the hardware and software for people to read and make there own judgment. At the time of writing i’ve been through 2 RROD with my 360, but I still like the system very much.
and personally PC gaming beats the crap out of consoles any day.
If you see a feature that is misrepresented or you feel could be elaborated more, please drop me a comment or email me (look in the contact page for “Bill”). Though please have some source to backup your claim.
For those of you who think the Wii should be included, Bugger off! The Wii stopped being a games console when my mum bought one!

Your source for the 360 failure rate is 22 months out of date. I know it’s still horribly unreliable, & I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole, but I’m sure Microsoft has dragged the average kicking, screaming & red ringing down to around the 15% mark by now.
Oh, & the PS3 hard drive, you can buy them with 160GB now so you might want to amend your 40GB-80GB bit.

@Alan No i haven’t
@Kaden101 Valid points , i’ll amend the cahrt. I think i’ll remove the failure rate field just till i find a more up-to-date source.
Thanks for your input.

In the PS3 the wireless card in original launch release was not included in the 20gb versions, also b/c in the eu versions is really limited to the 60gb versions.
the 360 now has themes, it always had themes, it even had a theme section in the blade systems. I remember, I used the dead rising theme.
the 360 has 3 usb ports, look at the back, you will find the 3rd. I am surprised you hadn’t noticed this since you have gone through 2 already, be sure to keep them in a clean environment with good air flow.
360 “wireless” controllers can be used with the pc, with this http://img25.imageshack.us/my.php?image=xboxusb1.jpg, i have used one. they are quite handy, also you can connect the 360 head set through it. both wired (through the controller) and the wireless one. A friend uses his head set to talk through skype.
my launch 360 uses vga output, which is superior to component even if just for bypassing some hd restrictions.
Please do some research in to this next time. There is always the truth, using your own truth is rather bad play especially when passing it on as unbiased fact for people to base judgements on.
Bill Nunney on 12 April, 2009
Thanks for your input Elderan. Totally missed the 3rd USB on the back
Also the wireless controller PC connection looks cool, might look into getting one of those as i do find the 360 controller layout to be more comfortable.
I keep my 360 on a shelf with at least 10cm clearance either edge, though the one Gamestation gave me made soo much noise before it died, i’m pretty sure there was a fan prob in it. Though out of interest do you keep yours flat or standing upright?
The truth can take a long time to materialize, thats why this is and open list
Elderan on 12 April, 2009
mine is kept lying flat, always has been.
You can not allow fact to be based on incomplete truths though, that is incredibly irratating to me, I apologise.

Yeah i keep mine flat too. Maybe i’ll have to pray to the RROD God, or maybe a human sacrifice.
Kaden101 on 16 April, 2009
Whilst you’re praying to the RROD God, you might also want to bow down to the E74 King, & the Lord of scratchy DVD’s. At least Microsoft are now covering the E74 errors under their warranty (better late than never). Maybe they’ll accept responsibility for the DVD scratching by 2011. That billion dollar “we built it broken” fund they put aside might start needing a top up at this rate. It may be a wonderful piece of kit, but as an example, if you you bought a brand new car & it was in the shop every 3 months due inherent faults, it wouldn’t matter how good the warranty was, you’d demand a permanent fix, or you’d never go near them again, & yet 360 fans will defend Microsoft to hell & back about how good their warranty & customer service is, because it’s replaced for another defective product free of charge. I don’t get it, would someone please explain it to me as I really don’t understand the mentatility.

I did have an xbox 360 elite before it got stolen, but i don’t know how they compare in reliability, if there is a different reliability between that of a standard xbox might be worth adding to the table. As for PS3, I like it, but I’ve been put off by the price, but you do get what you pay for! I guess if you add up yearly subscription fee, and put that money into a ps3 instead it pays dividends. But I don’t know why people defend a clearly substandard product. Even if elderan argues his hasn’t broken, he is clearly an exception to the rule. You have to go with the majority. Have an xbox flat, or laying down is irrelevant, it is clearly design to be standing, or lying down, so there is design flaw there isn’t there!
Bill Nunney on 16 April, 2009
@Kaden101
There are many 360 Gods about, One of my breakdowns was an E74. I think that if they spent a little bit longer devising a better cooling system, it would be far more reliable. I found an article earlier today about the 360s cooling (it is rather old though 2007).
http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_EN/20070801/137224/
This article shows that the GPU can reach above 100°C. I’ve been building high end PCs a long time now, Temperatures like that are VERY bad!!!
Kaden101 on 18 April, 2009
Bill, I know what you mean, 100°C is meltdown temperature – I began to think the temperatures in GPU’s were getting a bit scary when I put a Radeon HD3870 into my PC a while back & saw the temperature go well into the 80’s. Needless to say, I changed the GPU fan/heatsink for a better one straight away. This isn’t really an option for a console as you’re not meant to take it apart, so constant temperatures that high are not good at all – Microsoft could have done 2 simple things to aid temperatures, 1. redesigned the case/heatsinks for better cooling (even if it meant bigger box – Sony managed it & put a PSU, bluetooth & Wi-Fi in there as well), & 2. not overclocked every possible component to within an inch of it’s life – these things have been issues for PC builders for years now, & yet Microsoft seemed to be oblivious to it during the development of the 360.
Bill Nunney on 22 April, 2009
Yeah i remember installing an Nvidia 8800GTX, that thing managed to idle at 50-60 and easily reached into the 80s (and thats with the freaking huge heat sink). I think if you combine the Xbox and its PSU it works out to be the same volume as the PS3, would be much much heavier though. I’ve seen a few disassembles of the PS3 and the heat sink covers the entire board, and is cooled by a single 160mm fan. the board is also quite cleverly mounted upside down, which must help with dust buildup.
The 360 is OC’d? WTF thats insane!
Kaden101 on 30 April, 2009
If the 360 was a bit quieter, a bit more reliable, & a bit more integrated, ie the PSU, HDD, & Wi-fi (which I do need), & didn’t charge for the online (I already pay monthly for the internet, I don’t need another bill, no matter how small) then I might have considered a 360 some time ago due to it being initially cheaper, & there is one or two games that I’d like to give a go – Fable II for a start, oh when oh when will this turn up on PC. As it stands I’m more than happy with my PS3. Home is just starting to get good, & we’ve got some really good titles out & on the way. Roll on Gran Turismo 5, & God of War III. Infamous looks like it’ll bridge the gap for a while. March & April so far have been quiet on the game front (not fussed for Resi 5, or Street Fighter 4). Decided to go old school & finally get Final Fantasy X-2 completed before I donate my PS2 to relatives.
