SEO, something I really enjoy, however I strongly disagree with ‘black hat’ methods, as they are not only more likely to get you banned, they are short lived too. So here’s a few simple steps you can do to achieve better search engine rankings.
1. Add more relevant Copy
Content is king, and if anything is almost garanteed to get you more visitors, targeted and relevant, then its relevent copy for your website, you can either write it yourself, though like me, I struggle to write interesting content, especially if it’s a topic I’m not especially interested in. I end up just slouching in my chair, and getting back ache, so you can always get a professional copy writter to come up with some content, get quotes, some like to try and charge you through the roof!
2. Internal Linking & Title Tags
A lot of people under-estimate how important internal linking is, serveral inbound links to a particular page, with relevant title tags, is just another factor in seo. It basically tells google, or other search engines that you have pointed to this particular page a lot because its important. It also helps google to navagate it’s way around your site and crawl it easier, as well as helping your human visitors too, which should always be your ultimate goal ABOVE seo. Just as you would try and achieve an external text link, with relevant keywords within the achor text of the link to your site or a page on your site, do the same with title tags to internal links, and you’ll be suprised at the difference it makes.
3. Proper Alt Tag’s on Images
Don’t just keyword stuff your alt tags, or nearly every website I see doesn’t even bother to mark them up at all. It’s important to do so for accessbility reasons on your website, and google reconises this and rewards you accordingly in your rankings. So use proper describing words of your image. If it’s a picture of a spoon. Don’t just keyword stuff, or just say ‘spoon’. Say something like ‘A picture of a metal spoon’. That for example may help you rank better for the term ‘metal spoon’. You don’t have to patronise google by keyword spamming! Be relevant, targeted.
4. Target only a few relevant keywords per page
Don’t put you entire statergy into every single page, over and over again, it’s not going to do anyone any favours. Each page should target a handful of words, and do it well. They should all be relating to one another, and marry up with content on your page with your meta keywords & descriptions & alt tags on images, title tags on links.
5. Get more relevant inbound links
Many people go about this totally the wrong way, getting a link in anywhere they can. No! Just visit revelvant websites to yours, other blogs etc. Ie, if your site is a finance site, go find a finance blog, read what they have to say, and post your 2 pence worth. The comment is and will appear to be legitimate to the site owner, and they will accept it. You get a link and bobs your uncle. You can target a page, or just the whole domain depending on your stratergy.
Overview
The key is obviously relevancy, and not to over do it. Look at your campaign in months to years, not hours to days long.
