SEO is an unusual topic, especially when it’s in an industry which regulates itself, and their aren’t any reconised college or university courses which cover it, thus those who are SEO experts can only give themselves this title. SEO (search engine optimisation) however does have a close cousin, marketing – which is as close as you can get, and I know some marketing courses in normal education streams do cover SEO but only briefly, basic, and usually out of date information.
Am I a SEO Expert?
Well as I mentioned above, it can only really come down to being a ’self confessed SEO expert’, which I feel I am at times, but this is only because I compare myself to those who do not know any optimisation techniques – so this would make me an expert right? The truth in the matter though, is no matter how much of an epxert you think you are, unless you keep up within the industry, you’ll soon get left behind, search engines change, they change precudes, ranking factors, and if you don’t change with the times, you’re once top winning techniques will be ineffective, and you clients will be displeased!
What can I do to be a SEO Expert?
You can start by failing, and failing a lot! No I’m not joking, SEO is down to trial and error. Some things that you think will work, don’t, others which you thought wouldn’t work, do work and thus you need to adapt your stratergies and efforts. Most ‘SEO Experts’ will exhaust a single technique due to some postive results, for example, link buying – if you know anything about how it works, external links to your website do boost you’re overall rankings, and especially so to individual pages if you have relevant links pointing to them. However, focusing on link building ONLY, will saturate your SEO efforts, and ultimatley will fail. Traffic will perhaps sharply increase, yet decrease soon after using that method.
To be an ‘SEO Expert’ is about using all the factors, not just the obvious factors, but most importantly making a good website which is usable, and relevant to the users. Google, and other search engines want relevant, good websites, and ultimatley a good website will look after itself. A good website combined with SEO will take you further, and get you to the top of the engines for desired terms.
Black Hat SEO Techniques
I’m going to give you a link to a website, please copy and pate it into your browser, as I don’t directly want Wuup linking to a website which uses such techiques.

Scroll to the bottom of the page, and notice all those tiny keywords, with colour set to an off grey to blend with the background. It’s time to name and shame, these are the sort of ‘Seo Experts’ who give the people who use honest & correct methods a bad name!
