Setting Up a WordPress Blog With a Mac / PC

So my last post I wrote was all about how you can make money from blogging, and build a successful blog, without having to go through too much hassle and ignoring all the rubbish and illusions that people say about how easy it is to make money online. But anyway, yes, as a follow on from that I decided to knock up this step-by-step guide to setting up a wordpress blog. There are a few other tutorials out there but I’m hoping to make it just ‘that bit’ easier.

This tutorial works from the assumption you have bought a domain name, and have web hosting for it already.

I’m using a Mac to do this, but generally its exactly the same on a PC.

1. Download WordPress

Yup, this is the first thing you need to do, simply go to WordPress.org and click on the large download link on the top right.

download-wordpress

2. Unzip the WordPress Folder if it Hasn’t automatically on Mac

Double click on your downloaded zip file that will be called something similar to ‘wordpress2.9.2.zip’ as shown below:

You should end up with something like:

3. You need an FTP Client for your MAC or Windows PC

Well we all like free, so I suggest at the moment filezilla, which is nice and totally free :)

Go download / install it from.

http://filezilla-project.org/

4. FTP into your Web Hosting

When you set up your web hosting you would have been given some details which should consist of.

Hostname, or server name, or host, or server IP (different names for the same thing)

FTP username

FTP Password

FTP Port Number (usually 21).

Go to the site manager of Filezilla, which is here:

Once there, in the site manager. Set up a new site and enter your details:

Click ‘Connect’ once you are done!

5. Navigate to the right place

As this can vary from different hosting providers to others, you want to double click on the folders to get into the level which is called.

‘httpdocs’

‘wwwdocs’

‘www’

Or something pretty similar to those, as it can vary like i said, once in it should be empty, but sometimes they have the folder in ‘bin’, or ‘cgi-bin’, thats fine, just leave those.

Like this :) in my case its ‘httpdocs’

Double click on the folder name ‘httpdocs’, to go in. Once your in it should be pretty empty, or as mentioned above this screenshot.

6. Upload WordPress

This is pretty easy with filezilla, just open up the wordpress folder, see all the files in there – drag and drop all the files in that folder into the empty area of filezilla :)

Once its all finished uploading, can take a little while, your ready to go to your new blog and set it up.

So when you go to your website you should see this:

Ok, before you click that button, which might not work, you need to update the permissions to your httpdocs, upper level. So in filezilla go up a level, double click on the top ‘..’ entry to go up a level in the file system.

Right click on ‘httpdocs’ (or similar), and choose ‘file permissions’

Make them 0777 or like this:

Then go back to your site and click that button.

Ok lets go! Lets get the database set up!

7. WordPress Database

Ok you need to log in to your web hosting control panel, wether it be plesk, cpanel, or your hosts own system (or another system), and you need to create a MYSQL database.

No matter the system your on, this is what you need to do.

Set up a new database give it a name.

Set up a user for this database, give it a username.

Give this username a password.

Done!

Ok now put those details into the page as follows:

Your database host name is likely to be ‘localhost’, so don’t change it.

Click Submit, and then install, and your done! You’ve set up wordpress.

Hope this has been useful to you!
