When it comes to websites, we all want more traffic, or do we? So I though I’d talk about the heated debate of targeted traffic vs mass traffic.
I guess it comes down to the example of having a website on selling spoons, but bringing trafffic for knives, forks, plates and even something else completely unlreated. The question is, is it better to have 10,000 visitors which are more generic to your website on spoons, or have 1000 targeted spoon visitors who only want spoons.
I think I can guess what you are thinking, surely it is better to have 1000 targeted spoon visitors? Well maybe, yes they are targeted, yes they want spoons, so they will convert better. But what’s to say that out of those 10,000 visitors you get a 5% conversion - thats 500 converted customers, where as you are more likely to have something like a realistic 10% conversion on your targeted visitors, meaning you’d only convert 100 of them. Even if you converted 20%, you’d still be short by over half less.
So you see, its not just black and white. I guess the best day to day example you see of this is the banner advertising you see by many companies on large traffic websites like myspace and facebook, wired, or any high traffic website. The idea to get volume, and convert a very small percentage, obviously more the better!
I guess in my personal opinion, it comes downt to a balance, campaigns. On site optimisation needs to remain targeted. So search engines can bring you in relevant targeted traffic (or try to). When it comes to PPC, offsite advertising you can usually afford to be a little more creative. You’re website on spoons may well want to bid on keywords for forks, knives and spoons, but you’d want lower positions for your adverts than the ’spoons’, as this is your primary product. However you may well be able to convert that other traffic at the right price. Working out your conversion rates are important.
