Hi all,
Yeah been a couple of weeks since I last posted, but it’s really been chocker here in terms of work and what needs doing, but decided to make time this afternoon to post an article.
The topic, Twitter Marketing, probably hardly surprising for those who know me as that’s what we’ve been working on a lot with my other company Market Me Tweet LTD. Basically we’re offering out tools that firstly we personally find useful but also hopefully you guys will do too.
Namely we have 2 products already released.
DeskTweet – Allows you to update your twitter status without having to go the website or use a heavy application (lightweight and just 100kb).
TweetBrand – Allows you to brand all of your tweets, as far as I know, NO-ONE (at this time), is doing this.
I won’t go on to much about those, but I will talk about some Twitter marketing tips which I feel work, and why Twitter will be massive (it already is massive) but its momentum is going to continue to grow, maybe even to the point it overtakes other social media platforms.
Here’s why.
Twitter is the new kid on the block
This is obvious, but at the moment its still new, and they have millions of users already, and they are continuing to evolve all the time, like for example in just the past few weeks alone they’ve given birth to twitter lists, retweets and spam reporting features. Which is awesome. With the continuing hype from the media, celebrities etc Twitter can only grow, and it already is.
So how can twitter marketing help me?
Well it depends on your aims. I have various twitter accounts, including a person account, and other business accounts, but I have to say its potential is limitless. There are probably 3 main types of twitter use.
Personal Account Holders
I have one of these, I’m only interested on this account, connecting with certain people.
Personal Brand Account Holders
These people are looking to promote themselves, their portfolio services and what they can do by generating the largest following they can. Your talking thousands of followers, and picture this, you get an account with 10,000 followers or even more. That’s 10,000 people you can connect with, talk to, sell to and will actively see each tweet you send to them and look out for them!
But overall, these people with these accounts tend to be individual professionals.
Business Account Holders
These are the guy’s which twitter is after a lot at the moment, what with corporate accounts being offered out for a price by the end of this year. But even without a corporate account. What other service can you use to monitor your brand? Talk to your customers? Even offer out support? For Free. But the difference is, if you are offering out support via replies/mentions, everyone can see it! The value in everyone seeing your company taking a personal interest in an individual case is
immense. It shows your company cares, and will almost certainly lead to more sales. But also it gives you a voice to tell your users when things go wrong. I.e maybe “Site gone down, getting it up ASAP, Sorry” maybe. But also think about this, say your site really did go down, it’s a bit hard to apologise on a website that doesn’t work right?
Which account type Are you?
Once you’ve figured out what your trying to achieve. From the 3 main types above, then you can go about doing it in different ways. For the purpose of this article I will stick the personal brand, and business account users. Personal accounts are pretty self explanatory!
The Hard Part
Getting started is pretty hard, breaking through getting the first 100 followers is pretty hard. I won’t lie, it will take some time, but patience is key, as well as talking to as many people as you can. I wouldn’t worry about following more than you are following in the early days, that’s pretty normal, after all your just trying to get noticed and make some connections. But make sure you follow people who are relevant to you, or interest you and you can talk to. If and when they talk back to you, their followers will see they keep talking to you and you’ll get more followers. But remember this is just the beginning.
Using Tools
As soon as you get anything like a 1000 users, even probably less, the web just isn’t going to cut it as a good management tool anymore. So you’re going to need a tool to help you sort it out, but there are 2 very important things you must do:

Tell people what your doing
A good tool for helping you keep up to date is TweetDeck, but I do stress that because we create tools you are giving away all your traffic to TweetDeck in your sent from link, wasting good valuable traffic, so thats where our tool comes in, TweetBrand, shameless plug here! Sorry but its awesome!!
Top Tips
Linking
Sending links in every post, or even every other post is spammy, don’t do it, some people will just unfollow you, and others just will stop acknowledging your updates. If people like you, and even feel like they know you, they will take notice of your links.
Know What You Want To Promote in the Beginning
When you start out your account, know what you want to promote, what your goal is. Is it a product, a service, or yourself? It goes back to personal brand vs business. This will also include the naming of your account. You can change it, but once you’ve built up quite a following, I’m not sure that is a very good idea to do. But one of the main things is not to SELL SELL SELL, because that will turn people off. But your overall better telling people about what your doing rather then asking them to buy it.
Mundane Tweets
As much as people like to know you got up and you put your shoes on. Don’t do this, as it just starts to show that you are mad.
Background Image
Make sure you use a half decent background image, but I’m not that sure using those generated profile ones with contact details are worth it for businesses, but are best suited to personal brand twitter accounts. Otherwise settle for a cool image, or company logo.
Profile Image
Go for a picture of yourself for personal brand accounts, and a company logo for your company account. Simple.
Don’t Use
Feed posting applications or programmes like TwitterFeed which constantly post crap… Also don’t use mass follow tools, I will hate you.
Hope these Tips help, but if you follow whats here it’s pretty certain that you will start to get more followers!
