Web 2.0 Dead?

If you’ve actually used the internet you would have come across a Web 2.0 website, something such as Myspace, Facebook, Flickr, or other pointless sites to help you waste your time or feed that web addiction.

Well before I go into the point I want to make in this article, lets just explain what Web 2.0 actually is, its a buzz word for a collection of technologies, such as php, mysql, ajax, basically any web application which is coupled with a fancy web 2.0 design. That means lovely gradients, giant icons and stripey background. Thats when they start to get that generic web 2.0 look. As for the name web 2.0 its somewhat misleading, sounding like its an actual version of the web, when that is actually complete bollox.

As the Web moved into this era, of over graphical, and too much user control, we found almost as soon as it’s become mainstream, it’s heading out of the window. Maybe I’m jumping a little too fast, there are still Web 2.0 sites out there, just now they seem to be moving to an arty farty era, with plenty of sites adopting parts with frilly bits, and caligraphy styles of font. This looks alright, but kinda reminds me of my Gran’s wallpaper.

What’s next? Well I think the web will move more and more towards database driven applications, simply as the brian boxes at the search engine companies now have worked out how to crawl database pages with query strings and index them effectively. Though this is the case, from experience I have found nothing does as well as a static html page. However, what I can suggest is you stick with friendly URL’s like have, example is www.blah.com/site-page-here/ - this is a nice friendly URL, also I prefer - instead of _.

This article was inspired by a chat with a friend, and the fact we gave Wuup a bit of a facelift, we havent finished yet but we certainly are liking it more, if you don’t well quite frankly we dont care!

Thanks for reading
