I thought I would try and up my useful factor to level 3 (years of wizardry games does this to a man) – by giving you access to various websites / resources I find useful, of course the sites I link to will be going yay, we got an inbound link from the mighty Wuup! They will be grateful, and ask for mercy from us, and we shall consider it.
Before I totally loose what this article is actually about, I will start with CSS & design resources, so get your bookmarking pane out, and start adding…
CSS, Colour & Design Resources
http://csscreator.com/tools/layout - A handy tool, does exactly what it says on the tin, I suggest you do what I do which is to create various layouts and store them on your design computer. That way you can pick a starting point. This generator will get you half way there, it’s not perfect, but its free, and we like free… It’s best feature is to create fluid or fixed templates.
http://www.colorcombos.com/ - I love this tool, especially when it comes to choosing colours, they are my weakness (just like clark kent and cryptonite, which all his enemies have to have plenty of…). You can put in a website you like, and it will pull out all the colours, it’s great, handy, and great for inspiration.
http://www.colorschemer.com/schemes/search.php?s=%23FF0000 - this is another handy colour tool, i’ve included a search url, which contains my search for red. It then brings up combination’s in the results, but you can search for more than just hex colour codes.
http://www.cssbeauty.com/ - CSS beauty, a great site. It’s a site gallery, and brilliant for those brickwalls of inspiration. If you dare you can submit your site, it’s great for generating traffic as I’ve heard from other people, good designs will bring you plenty of traffic, though perhaps it isn’t much use if its not targetted, but to get reconised as web designer, definatley post your best work here – This site is community driven, so expect lots of user comments.
Coding & Development Resources
http://www.experts-exchange.com/ - I’m a registered expert on this site & have answered a few questions, but this also allows me to look at answers to many questions & ask questions myself, although this site isn’t directly aimed at web design, or deveopment, it has a thriving community of experts for these topics, and has never failed to find me an answer.
http://www.php.net/docs.php - Shameless PHP promotion inserted here. PHP has its published manual online, with users adding there own experiences, tutorials, scripts and much more.
http://www.phpclasses.org/ - A simple website, which provides many free open source classes which can be a big time saver as well as problem solver.
http://www.adobe.com – Adobe isn’t just a money hungry monopoly of web design applications & industry standard tools, it provides many useful tutorials, resources, forums, and more, worth a quick visit, plus Bill will appreciate this link.
Validation & Usability
http://www.w3.org/ - An information rich website, the mother of all standards, its w3.org – they secretly think they own the web, but its more of a myth, never-the-less, this site has plenty of useful stuff.
http://www.usability.gov/ - A government website totally dedicated to usability, this is worth spending quite some time reading through and getting grips with.
Other Resources
http://www.wuup.co.uk – Shameless Wuup Promotion inserted here!
Hope there some useful stuff here.
Cheers
