A few of you will already know what I’m going to say before I say it, and those of you who don’t for god’s sake listen!
You could make the best looking site in the world for your client, with the best technology and flawless features, yet if your client does not know the importance of the website copy, you will be hindered by delays.
The website copy is incredibly important, if you’ve grab your users attention, you next need to realise that they aren’t going to read very much, and if they do read, it has to be accurate, precise and to the point, otherwise your users will leave.
Who knows best?
To a certain extent I can agree that client knows ‘best’, as they do tend to know their products and audience, yet they usually cannot write copy which will ’sell’ unless they have sales copywriter experience. If your client does write your copy I can seriously suggest to you that you hire a freelance copy editor to refine the copy. Not only is this cheaper, you will be able to churn out copy quickly.
Do it Yourself
Things to remember when doing the copy yourself or offering a copywriter service. Firstly remember the audience you are writing for. Who are they? What age group, etc, I’m not going to patronise you.
Next, don’t use over complicated language or buzz words. Also don’t use technical language targeted to your product only, chances are your reader wont know what it means, and if they don’t understand they don’t buy!
Try to be direct, write about your product in a positive way, and remember you’re trying to encourage them to buy it!
To conclude, if your writing about a product, remember to keep it clear, concise, make use of things like bullet points, and keep things positive.
Content Sites & Content
These sites are usually designed to pull in lots of traffic, and convert a minority of it. This can work, and you really want to churn out as much copy as you can, RELATING to your product or topic.
These types of sites can do better if your copy is exciting and fun too, as there will be a lot of it. If its structured and easy to read you’re be able to keep a higher number of your visitors from leaving, or keep them coming back.
Make use of services like ‘Digg’ to have your users recommend your articles.
Conclusion
Make sure your client’s know the importance of the copy, and justify the use of a copywriter if possible. If not, insist they use a copy editor. If this fails either reject the work, or explain to them the poor performance of their website.
Hope you enjoyed this, and a portion of you will instantly relate to this frustrating yet important topic.
Cheers
